Kolkata: Though 'The Kerala Story' is playing in cinema halls in different parts of the country, it has been banned in West Bengal. And in opposition to this, a pair of public interest cases have been filed in Calcutta High Court. On Wednesday, permission was sought to file two public interest litigations in the bench of Chief Justice TS Shivajnanam.
A litigant named Anindya Sundar Das applied to the court to file a public interest litigation, questioning why the decision was taken to ban the film. Petitioner pleads, thus the cinema cannot be stopped by issuing notification. Besides, a second public interest case has been filed in the court regarding the film. The second case was filed by a person named Devdatta Majhi. Petitioner Devdatta Majhi also requested that the court dismiss the notification issued by the state. Images cannot be banned this way. Two public interest cases have been applied for hearing on urgent basis. The case is likely to be heard next week.
Incidentally, 'The Kerala Story' directed by Sudipta Sen was released on May 5. Many controversies have started with the film. In the meantime, the state government has banned the exhibition of the film in the state on Monday. According to the state, this decision has been taken to maintain peace and law and order situation. Meanwhile, the filmmakers approached the Supreme Court to ban the film in the state. A hearing is scheduled in the apex court on May 12.
