Titus has proposed a 47 percent increase in the price of gas for residential use. According to their proposal, users will have to pay Tk 1,380 for one stove and Tk 1,592 for two stoves.
Currently users have to pay 990 Taka for one stove and 1 thousand 80 Taka for 2 stoves.
Titus says that when the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) fixed the price of gas for household consumption in June last year, the consumption of gas is higher than what was estimated.
On May 5, Titus Gas Transmission and Distribution Company sent this letter to BERC.
BERC Secretary Khalilur Rahman Khan told The Daily Star, 'This is not an official proposal to increase gas prices. As per BERC rules, if such proposals are sent by the distribution companies, they will have to conduct a public hearing before increasing the gas prices.
He further said, 'However, we will not hold a public hearing based on this letter. I will sit down with them about what they have found and discuss with them our findings on pricing.'
'They have sent a letter saying that consumers are consuming more gas than the price fixed by BERC. We will hold an exchange meeting with the distributors tomorrow,' he added.
