Kumarganj: While renovating the temple's old pond, a hard stone idol was recovered. The incident happened near BDO office in Gopalganj Nakati area of Kumarganj block of Dakshin Dinajpur district. According to the temple authorities, the idol is about one and a half feet in height and one foot in width. The idol is the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is believed to be built during the Pala period.
The statue was found on Tuesday afternoon during the renovation of its pond ghat of the Nakkati Rakshakali temple in the area. Police from Kumarganj police station came there by evening after receiving the news. The police want to recover the statue and take it to the police station. At that time, the temple authorities and the people of the area informed the police in writing that since the idol was found in the temple pond, it is believed to have been in the temple at some time. That's why everyone requested to install the idol in the temple.
Kumarganj BDO Chhewang Tamang said, "I heard that an idol was found while cleaning the pond of Rakshakali temple. The villagers said in writing that they would install the statue in the temple. I heard that the wishes of the villagers will be fulfilled.
Biplab Mandal, one of the officers of the temple committee, said, "The rescued idol will be installed in the Rakshakali temple. The idol will be ceremonially installed in the temple on an auspicious day very soon.'
